He started playing soccer from his first year of elementary school and continued playing at his time at Minami-Totsuka Junior High School in Yokohama City. In his third year of junior high school, he received an offer from Shonan Bellmare Youth Academy and joined Shonan Youth upon entering Kanai High School in Kanagawa Prefecture. At the 64th National Athletic Meet, which he participated in during his second year of high school, he greatly contributed to the victory as captain of the Kanagawa Prefectural Boys' Selection Team.
In 2010, he was registered with Shonan Bellmare as a Class 2 registered player, made his J League debut, and was promoted to the senior team in 2011. He permanently moved to Urawa Reds in 2015 and won his first professional title in 2016 by winning the J. League YBC Levain Cup final. In 2017, he won the AFC Champions League, his first international title. In the same year, he was selected for the Japan national team for the first time and made his first appearance against North Korea.
In 2018, he was called up to the Russia World Cup squad, making his first World Cup squad and making a permanent move to Sint-Truidense V.V. of the Jupiler Pro League in Belgium. He made his debut in the derby against KRC Genk on matchday 2 and scored his first goal since his arrival. In 2020, he permanently transferred to VfB Stuttgart where he was crowned Bundesliga Duel King two years in a row. In the final round of the 2021-22 season (against FC Köln), he scored a dramatic winner in the second half of added time which kept his team in the first division to the delight of the stadium’s home fans.
At the Qatar World Cup, he contributed greatly to the team's victories, including victories over traditional powerhouses of Germany and Spain. Appointed as the captain of SAMURAI BLUE (Japan National Team) at the "Kirin Challenge Cup 2023" held in June 2023. Then, in August 2023, he transferred to one of the most prestigious clubs in the Premier League, Liverpool FC.
